Reel and ease off rather than holding continuously
Two respondents in the post-launch fishing discussion advise reeling when the line is not red. One describes tapping; another describes holding during the safe part. Ease off during red and repeat as needed.
Use your displayed input. The discussion does not verify one keyboard key or controller button for every platform. It also disagrees about the exclamation mark, so this guide does not prescribe an exact action from that symbol alone.

Fishing bait in a bag is not detected?
Update 1.009 fixes fishing failing to find bait stored in bags. Check your installed version if bait is present but the game does not detect it. This inventory fix is separate from reeling technique and does not establish the best bait, fish locations or catch rates. PC notes do not establish the build installed on your console.
